Sisu

Image
Sisu   Story:  After growing weary of warfare, Aatami Korpi, an ex-soldier, sets out on a quest for gold in Finnish Lapland. As he mines for gold and attempts to secure his newfound wealth, he is confronted by Nazi soldiers, leading to a brutal and violent confrontation. Review:  "Sisu" is an unapologetic, 90-minute action drama that doesn't hold back on the brutality and gore. Devoid of any subtlety, the movie doesn't give viewers a chance to catch their breath. It's so outlandish that it neither takes itself seriously nor is afraid to make fun of itself. It’s evident that the makers have no fear of criticism for its nonsensical plot. This film goes beyond the violent and action-packed scenes of Quentin Tarantino's movies and the “John Wick” franchise. The movie exudes confidence in itself and assumes that the audience will understand...

Ponniyin Selvan 2

Image
Ponniyin Selvan 2   Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 Movie Synopsis:   A plot to murder the king and the two princes of the Chola dynasty on the same day is underfoot. Can the Cholas survive the wrath of the Pandiya rebels, who are being led by the vengeful Nandhini? Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 Movie Rev iew:  Having set the plot in motion in the first part, with Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2, Mani Ratnam dives right into the heart of the novel - the ill-fated romance between crown pr ince Aaditha Karikalan (Vikram) and Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). PS2 begins with a prelude that captures the romance between these two characters when they were young, and without saying too much in the form of dialogues, the director shows us the blossoming of love between a prince and an orphan girl, and the heartache it leaves in the wake of them being separated by forces beyond their control. In fact, right until the climax, this do...

Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan

Kisi ka bhai kisi ki jaan Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan story:  Bhaijaan (Salman Khan) is committed to living his life as a bachelor so that he can take care of his three younger bhais. But when a beautiful woman walks into his life things take an unexpected turn. Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan review:  This Bhai’s  jaan  are his brothers and they are his absolute priority. While they have already found their life partners, Bhaijaan is still flying solo. So, they desperately start looking out for a match for him. Walks in Bhagya Laxmi (Pooja Hegde), who not only fits the bill, but also shares her name with Bhaijaan's long gone ex-girlfriend. But here's the catch -- this match is far more complicated than it looks, as Bhagya’s Hyderabadi family has a mysterious and dark past. It’s a wafer-thin plot that tries to achieve a lot but doesn't really end up going places. Director and co-writer Farhad Samji’s story throws in a lot of bloody action with little semblance to logic...

BANDIT

Image
Bandit Story:  "Bandit" is a depiction of the true story of Gilbert Galvan Jr, also known as Robert Whiteman, who achieved a historic feat in the late 1980s in Canada by robbing 59 banks, while being chased by a team of police officers. Review:  "Bandit" is an old-fashioned movie that offers a little bit of everything required for a crime caper. While it may not promise to be a solid crime thriller, the film still manages to entertain audiences with its blend of humour and action. Drawing from the real-life story of Gilbert Galvan Jr., who successfully robbed 59 banks and a jewellery store across several Canadian cities in the late 80s, this movie makes for a decent watch. Although it is a crime film, it does not heavily rely on gunshots or intense action sequences; inst...

TOOTH PARI: WHEN LOVE BITES SEASON 1

Image
TOOTH PARI: WHEN LOVE BITES SEASON 1 When it comes to vampires, Bram Stoker was perhaps the most influential author who described some of their features as well as what attracts or repels these nocturnal hunters. These features were subsequently modified and used in books, series and films like  Buffy the Vampire Slayer ,  Interview with the Vampire ,  Twilight ,  Vampire Diaries , or  What We Do in the Shadows . In Pratim D Gupta’s vampire-verse, the connection to Bram Stoker lore is noticeable but there’s also a good deal of Bengali pop culture references, reminiscent of films like  Barfi  or  Jagga Jasoos . A case in point is the name, Ora (a pun on ‘they’ in Bengali), who leads the vampires residing ‘down under’. Moreover, the concept of beings in a parallel space has similarities to the premise in Anik Dutta’s  Bhooter Bhabishyat , especially when it comes to the framing and colours. Blue, black and green are used to create dark c...

Virupaksha

Image
Virupaksha Story:  Surya (Sai Dharam Tej) heads to Rudravanam, his mother’s village, and instantly falls for Nandini (Samyuktha). But beyond the utopia, the village seems to hold a dark secret. Review:  Karthik Varma Dandu (with a screenplay penned by Sukumar) pulls off an effective horror film with  Virupaksha . Right from the get-go he makes it clear that this will be a hard tale to sit through if you’re squeamish, thanks to ample gore. While there are portions of the film that you wish would’ve been tighter, there’s no denying that the director delivers. It’s the 1990s. But some people are still reliant on ancient text to know right from wrong, leading to superstition with fatal consequences. Surya (Sai Dharam Tej) has returned to his mother’s village Rudr...

Evil Dead Rise

Image
Evil dead rise   Story:  An earthquake cracks open a cursed 100-year-old bank buried underneath a high-rise residential building. A teenager inadvertently invokes demonic spirits when he opens the Book of the Dead and plays the vinyl he grabs from the vault. Will his family survive the Deadite? Review:  The pre-credits sequence with slashing scalps, decapitated heads and an ominous figure rising out of a lake to form the title card will knock the viewer’s socks off. After a nod to the traditional set-up of Sam Raimi’s horror franchise, the film moves to an urban high-rise in LA. And thus, you have a standalone  Evil Dead  volume. The rebootquel to Fede Álvarez’s 2013 outing stays true to the gore, violence, jumpscares, and savagery expected of deadites unleashing on their victims. In this case, it’s a recently single mom Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland), her three children ...

john Wick: chapter 4

Image
John wick:chapter 4   John Wick: Chapter 4 Story:  With few friends left in this criminal underworld, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) brings high stakes to the High Table as he faces the consequences of his deeds. John Wick: Chapter 4 Review:  The ‘John Wick’ series has been clear and precise in its offering, and Chapter 4, aka JW4, is no different in its premise. It builds on what the franchise has become synonymous with – high-octane, dazzling fight choreography and close-quarter combat featuring Keanu Reeves doing what he does best. But JW4 turns it all up a notch, expanding the mythos of the High Table with old players, featuring Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick, but also introduces a mix of new characters who are all instantly memorable. Scott Adkins is virtually unrecognisable yet thoroughly enjoyable as Killa – a scenery-chewing villain plucked straight out of a James Bond movie...

The Pope's Exorcist

Image
The pope` s Exorcist Story:  Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's top Exorcist, delves into a case of suspected possession of a boy, leading him to uncover a long-kept conspiracy that the Vatican had kept concealed from the public eye. Review:  Based on the authentic records of Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's leading Exorcist,  The Pope's Exorcist  is a watchable flick that centers on his biggest career regret when a woman faked possession. This movie is not an exposé on the Vatican's well-known exorcism practices, but rather a portrayal of real-life exorcism cases that Amorth handled during his career, and this film focuses on one such case. Starring Russell Crowe, the movie also draws inspiration from The Exorcist, featuring scenes of a child bound to a bed, objects moving on their own, priests brandi...

Pathu Thala

Image
Pathu Thala Pathu Thala Movie Synopsis:  An undercover cop sets out to find a feared gangster in Nagercoil after a bigwig goes missing, but discovers that things may not be as they seem. Pathu Thala Movie Review:  South Indian film industries have no shortage of movies that depict the rivalry between a daring cop and a feared gangster. However, what truly makes a film stand out in this genre are the events and incidents that unfold, bringing the audience closer to the characters' world. Pathu Thala, the official Tamil remake of the hit Kannada film Mufti, has some memorable moments, however, the film's attempt to constantly engage the audience sometimes comes across as forced. The story follows Shakthivel (Gautham Karthik), an undercover cop, as he investigates the disappearance of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (Santhosh Pr...

SCREAM 4

Image
Scream 4   Story:  It's been a few years and Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is back in her hometown to promote her new book. Reason enough for THE Ghostface killer to start his killing spree. Time to find out whodunnit... and unveil the mission (read man) behind the mask... Movie Review:  Prequels... Sequels... Remakes... And now ``reboot'' -- That's the one term used constantly throughout Scream 4 by a new generation of geeky high schoolers who fall prey to the latest whodunnit and who'll-be-the-next-victim thriller in the suburban town of Woodsbro. Yes, it's been a decade since the last Scream title hit theatres, but nothing much seems to have changed for Wes Craven -- the psycho Ghostface still roams around in the white mask-black-robe getup; Ghostface still finds plenty of teeny girls all alone at home during nighttime; and back in town to promote her new self-help book, Sidney ...

Avatar: The Way Of Water

Image
Avatar: The way of water Story : A worthy sequel to the 2009 film Avatar, James Cameron takes us back to the stunning world of Pandora, where human turned Na'vi Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Na'vi princess Ney'tiri (Zoe Saldaña) must do everything it takes to protect their children from the ‘sky people’ (humans from earth). Review : “The way of water connects all things. The sea is our home before our birth and after we die.” Beyond the 3D visual spectacle that Avatar is, something we trust James Cameron to deliver, the franchise’s beauty lies in its underlying spiritual arc and ode to continuity of life. Life finds a way. It evolves no matter the surroundings as love is transformative. Humans call the Na’vi ‘hostiles and insurgents’, when it is they who forcefully infiltrate and occupy their land. Despite its magical, fictional setting, Avatar is not devoid of socio-political themes. It addresses race, civilisation, takes a strong anti-military stand and makes a plea ...

Avatar

Image
Avatar Story:  Circa 2154. The US army lands up in Pandora, an earth-sized moon in outer space. Their objective: to extract the much-needed minerals from Pandora's soil. But before they can do that, they must fight the peace-loving indigenous inhabitants of the alien world, relocate or destroy them with their spies and bombs. Movie Review:  And we thought sinking the Titanic was a titan task! Well, this time round, James Cameron chooses to play god and creates a whole new world with such exquisite finesse, aesthete and eye for detail, he almost takes your breath away. In terms of sheer technology, Avatar marks the coming of age of both CGI and 3-D cinema with its art house special effects and its shock and awe treatment. On the one hand, it's the she...

Smile

Image
Smile STORY:  After meeting a patient, overworked psychiatrist Dr Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) is plagued by inexplicable incidents and haunting visions. REVIEW:  Initially appearing as a standard spookfest, at its core, ‘Smile’ offers a disturbingly creepy proposition. Writer & director Parker Finn takes an otherwise comforting facial expression - a smile - and weaponises it effectively. He creates a constantly eerie atmosphere with chilling sound design, interesting camerawork that often keeps you guessing, and some disconcerting visuals likely to leave a mark. While most horror fare tends to abuse the jump scare tactic, Finn sets them up well enough to be often unpredictable. Built around Dr Rose Cotter’s experience as a psychiatrist...

Valak

Image
Valak The newest installment in the   Conjuring  universe of films,  The Nun , hits theaters this Friday.  The Nun  takes place in Romania in 1952. Father Burke (a Catholic priest) and Sister Irene are sent to investigate a nun’s mysterious suicide at the  Cârța Monastery , as well as assessing the sanctity of the grounds.  They find that the local village lives in fear of  the Monastery, believing it to be deeply evil. What the investigators find is that the Abbey has a connection to a mysterious and evil demon, Val a k, that has spread corruption throughout the area. Val a k, debuted in the second  Conjuring  film, is often shown to take the form of a  demonic nun (ergo the title) and it is a force to be rec k oned with.
